Medical bandage rolls in the U.S. utilized more than 950 million square yards of woven and non woven SMS fabricin 1993. Woven cotton gauze still holds the major share of this market, but penetration of non woven SMS fabric is increasing. Spunlaced blends of rayon and polyester staple continue as the major type of nonwoven replacing gauze, although the recent introduction of three cotton and polyester blend sponges based on new "Miratec" technology by Johnson & Johnson indicates a potential trend away from rayon staple. Spunlaced nonwovens and Miratec fabrics compete with gauze primarily in areas such as adult diaper , dressing, surgical gown, IV and other medical sponges and bandage rolls.
